Portsmouth University Visit

Portsmouth University Marine Biology Students Dive into the Aquarium Trade at the Coral Centre and Future Oceans Foundation.
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming third-year Marine Biology students from University of Portsmouth to The Coral Centre for an immersive, hands-on introduction to the realities and rewards of working in the marine aquarium sector.
Their visit gave them a unique look at both the commercial and conservation-focused aspects of the industry.
Understanding the Aquarium Trade: Challenges & Opportunities
Rob Peck kicked off the day with a deep dive into the challenges facing the marine aquarium trade—from sustainability and ethical sourcing to the importance of mariculture over wild collection. Students learned about the role aquaculture plays in reducing pressure on wild reefs, while still meeting demand for ornamental species in hobbyist and public aquaria worldwide.
Innovating with the CoralPod: Applied Research in Action
Leigh-Marie Hobday introduced students to the CoralPod®, an innovative reef restoration unit developed in collaboration with local partners, Artecology . This multifaceted system serves as a vital sanctuary for various marine life forms, including fish, marine vertebrates, and invertebrates. The CoralPod® exemplifies how modular design and automation can enhance coral reproduction and support scalable, sustainable coral cultivation.
Aquarium Maintenance: More Than Just Water Changes
Charlotte explained to Students the importance of routine maintenance tasks, learning how a healthy marine system depends on more than just clean water. From water chemistry and flow management to lighting systems and livestock welfare, they saw firsthand the daily responsibilities behind running a professional marine setup.
Hands-On Coral Fragging Workshop
Finally, a coral fragging session, where students practiced cutting and mounting coral fragments—a key skill for propagation and reef restoration. Working with fast-growing maricultured species, they learned best practices in coral handling, health assessment, and attachment techniques.

We’re proud to support the next generation of marine scientists and aquarists. Days like these remind us of the value of collaboration between academia and industry, and the importance of hands-on experience in shaping informed, skilled ocean stewards.
A huge thank you to the team at Portsmouth University, and to the students for their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions. We look forward to welcoming the next cohort soon!
